Musée Christian Dior, Villa Les Rhumbs
Few visitors connect Granville with haute couture, yet the town is the birthplace of Christian Dior, and his family's Belle Époque villa — perched on the cliff edge above the English Channel — now houses a museum dedicated to the designer's life and work. The gardens alone are worth the journey.
The Villa and the Collection
Villa Les Rhumbs is a pink-and-white confection of turrets and verandas that Dior described as 'the happiest place of my childhood.' Inside, rotating exhibitions draw on the Dior archive — original gowns, sketches, photographs and personal letters — presented in rooms that still feel like a family home rather than a sterile gallery.
The permanent collection traces Dior's early life in Granville, his years studying art in Paris and the 1947 New Look collection that changed fashion history. It is a surprisingly moving portrait of how a place shapes a person.
The Cliff Garden
The garden cascades down the cliff face in a series of terraced beds planted with roses, hydrangeas and lavender that Dior himself cited as a lifelong inspiration for his colour palette and silhouettes. In July the rose garden peaks and the scent is extraordinary.
A small tea salon operates in the garden during summer, serving homemade tarts and local cider — take a table on the terrace and look out over the same seascape that Dior painted as a boy. It is one of the most quietly romantic spots on the Normandy coast.
