Musée Christian Dior, Villa Les Rhumbs
Christian Dior was born in Granville in 1905 and spent his childhood summers in this extraordinary Belle Époque villa perched on the cliff above the English Channel. Today the house is a museum dedicated to his life and work, and the gardens alone are worth the trip.
The Museum
The villa's rooms have been restored to evoke the Dior family's early 20th-century seaside life, and each summer a major temporary exhibition fills the house with haute couture — past themes have included Dior and the world's great gardens, Dior and cinema, and retrospectives of creative directors who followed the founder.
The permanent collection includes personal photographs, sketches, childhood objects and letters that humanise the legend behind the New Look. It's a small but beautifully curated museum — plan 90 minutes minimum.
The Gardens
The terraced gardens of Villa Les Rhumbs cascade down the granite cliff toward the sea in a riot of hydrangeas, roses, tamarisk and agapanthus. Dior credited these gardens with giving him his lifelong obsession with flowers, which became a defining motif of his couture.
The upper terrace looks directly out over the Channel toward Jersey and Guernsey — on clear days the islands are plainly visible. The gardens are maintained by the municipality and are among the most photographed spots in all of Normandy.
