Îles Chausey Day Trip from Granville
The Chausey archipelago — 52 islands at low tide, just one at high — lies 45 minutes by ferry from Granville's port and feels like a different world: no cars, no crowds outside August, just granite islets, turquoise shallows and Europe's largest tidal range.
What Makes Chausey Special
The tidal range at Chausey reaches 14 metres at spring tides — one of the greatest in the world — which means the seascape transforms completely every six hours. At low tide, kilometres of sand bars, rock pools and oyster beds appear from nowhere; at high tide, the smaller islands vanish beneath the Atlantic.
The single inhabited island, Grande Île, has a lighthouse, a small hotel, a handful of fishermen's cottages and a population of around 30 year-round residents. There are no roads and no cars. The silence, interrupted only by gulls and the wind, is genuinely startling after mainland Normandy.
How to Spend the Day
The ferry from Granville's port (operated by Compagnie Corsaire) runs multiple crossings daily in summer and allows you to time your visit around the tide. Arriving at low tide and leaving at high gives you the full spectacle of the transformation.
Bring a picnic — the island's one small restaurant fills up fast in July and August. Walk the perimeter path of Grande Île (about 5 km), swim in the sheltered lagoon on the eastern side, and collect sea glass on the pink-granite beaches. Snorkelling in the rock pools at low tide reveals starfish, sea anemones and small lobsters.
