Restaurant Le Phare, Granville
Tucked into the port district just below the Haute Ville, Le Phare has been feeding Granville locals and savvy visitors for decades with an unapologetically Norman menu built around whatever the boats brought in that morning. The dining room is simple, the portions are generous, and the fish is impeccably fresh.
What to Order
The plateau de fruits de mer — a tiered tower of Chausey oysters, langoustines, whelks, crab claws and shrimp — is the dish that defines the restaurant and the reason people drive from Avranches and Saint-Lô to eat here. Order it for two and you won't need a main course.
If you want something hot, the sole meunière is textbook: butter-basted, lemon-bright and served whole. The fish comes from the quay 200 metres away, and the kitchen doesn't overcomplicate it. Finish with a tarte Normande — apple, cream, calvados — and a small glass of local Domfrontais pear cider.
When to Go and How to Book
Lunch is the main event in Granville's restaurant culture, and Le Phare fills up fast on weekends between June and September. Book at least two days ahead for Saturday lunch; weekday lunches are easier to walk into.
The fixed-price lunch menu (entrée, plat, dessert) offers excellent value and usually includes a glass of house Muscadet. Sit near the window if you can — the view over the fishing boats in the basin is part of the meal.
