Marché de Granville (Saturday Market)
Every Saturday morning the lower town's streets around Place du Marché fill with one of the most authentic food markets on the Cotentin coast, drawing farmers, fishers and cheesemakers from across the Manche département. Come hungry and bring a basket.
What to Buy
The stalls pile high with local camembert and livarot wheels, fat Isigny butter, cider-braised pork rillettes and trays of oysters from the beds off Cancale and Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. Vendors are proud and chatty — a few words of French go a long way toward an extra taste.
Look for the seasonal Cotentin lamb, raised on salt-marsh pastures (pré-salé) that give the meat a subtle briny sweetness. It is sold by local farmers who will tell you exactly which field their animals grazed in.
Beyond the Food
A section of the market spills into the surrounding streets with stalls selling Breton-stripe marinières, antique lace, vintage postcards and second-hand maritime charts — ideal for a quirky souvenir that won't break the luggage allowance.
Grab a galette-saucisse (buckwheat crêpe wrapped around a grilled sausage) from one of the street vendors and eat it on a bench in the square while watching Granvillais do their weekly shop — this is as local as Normandy life gets.
