La Citadelle Restaurant
Tucked just inside the walls of the Haute Ville on Rue du Port, La Citadelle has been the address for serious Norman seafood in Granville for decades, plating the day's catch with classical technique and very little fuss. The dining room's stone walls and low beams feel exactly right for a place that overlooks a working fishing port.
What to Order
The homard (blue lobster) landed at Granville's own port is the signature — served simply grilled with herb butter or in a bisque rich enough to constitute a meal on its own. Sole meunière, cooked in the Norman fashion with a generous hand of local butter, is the other dish that regulars return for.
Start with a plateau de fruits de mer if the table can manage it: a tiered tower of oysters, whelks, langoustines and spider crab that arrives with rye bread and Isigny butter. It is the definitive Normandy coast opener.
Cider and Calvados
The wine list is respectable but the smarter move is to drink as the locals do: a dry Normandy cidre bouché (sparkling cider) with the shellfish, and a small glass of aged calvados from the Pays d'Auge to close the meal. The staff are happy to guide you through the calvados selection.
Lunch is the better value sitting — a two-course formule at around €22–28 lets you eat very well without the full evening spend. Book ahead for weekend lunch, especially in July and August.
