Palazzo Trinci
Hidden behind an unassuming façade on Piazza della Repubblica, Palazzo Trinci is one of central Italy's best-preserved Gothic palaces, its rooms smothered in early 15th-century frescoes that rival anything in Perugia or Siena. Most visitors to Umbria walk straight past it — don't.
The Frescoes of Gentile da Fabriano's Circle
The palace's showpiece is the Sala delle Arti e dei Pianeti, where allegorical figures representing the liberal arts and planetary deities gaze down from vivid, well-preserved frescoes painted around 1411–12 by Ottaviano Nelli and his workshop. The colours — deep lapis, burnt orange and forest green — are startlingly fresh.
A monumental Gothic staircase leads to the loggia, whose lunettes depict the Founding of Rome in a narrative cycle that blends classical mythology with medieval storytelling. It is rare, scholarly and genuinely beautiful.
The Civic Museum Inside
The palazzo also houses Foligno's Museo Civico, which holds Roman finds from the ancient city of Fulginium, including mosaic floors, bronze votive objects and a fine collection of Umbrian ceramics spanning the medieval to Renaissance periods.
The archaeological section in the basement preserves the original Roman street level beneath the palace, letting you literally walk over 2,000 years of urban history in a single visit.
Practical Considerations
The palace is rarely crowded even in high season, which means you can linger in front of the frescoes without tour-group pressure — a luxury increasingly hard to find in Umbria.
Combined tickets with the Cattedrale di San Feliciano are sometimes available at the desk; ask when you arrive.
