Mercato Settimanale di Foligno
Every Tuesday and Saturday morning, Foligno's weekly market spreads across Piazzale Alunno and the surrounding streets in one of the largest open-air markets in Umbria — a working-class, genuinely local affair where Norcia black truffles, Castelluccio lentils and Sagrantino-braised sausages sit alongside bolts of fabric and cheap hardware. Come hungry.
What to Buy
The food section, concentrated near the covered Mercato Coperto on Via Garibaldi, is where to focus. Look for vendors from the Valnerina selling dried porcini and truffle paste, farmers from the Piano Grande plateau with their famous Castelluccio lentils in paper bags, and local cheeses — pecorino stagionato aged in caves, fresh ricotta still warm from the morning.
Foligno sits at a crossroads between the olive oil zones of Trevi and Spoleto, so several stalls sell DOP Umbria extra-virgin oil by the litre at prices you will not find in any deli. Bring an empty bottle or buy one from the stall.
Timing and Navigation
Arrive between 8:30 and 10:30 for the best selection and the most atmospheric buzz; by noon the produce vendors begin packing up. The Saturday market is larger than Tuesday's and extends further along Viale Mezzetti.
The Mercato Coperto (covered market hall) on Via Garibaldi is open Monday to Saturday and worth a separate visit for its butchers and fishmongers — unusually good for an inland Umbrian town, thanks to Foligno's role as a regional distribution hub.
