Mercato Settimanale di Foligno

Every Tuesday morning, Foligno's weekly market sprawls across the streets and squares around Viale Mezzetti and the area near Porta Romana, pulling in farmers, foragers and textile sellers from across the Topino Valley. It is the most honest snapshot of everyday Umbrian life you will find in the region.

What to Buy

The food stalls are the main event: look for truffle-laced pecorino from the Valnerina, strings of dried Cannara onions (a local DOP-level speciality), hand-rolled strangozzi pasta, and seasonal porcini mushrooms piled in wooden crates when autumn arrives.

Local farmers sell pressed olive oil in unlabelled bottles — ask for a taste before buying. The oil from the hills around Trevi and Montefalco, both within 15 km of Foligno, is among the finest in Umbria.

Beyond Food

Textile and clothing stalls sell sturdy linen and cotton goods at prices that shame tourist boutiques. Rummage through the antique and bric-a-brac section near the outer edges of the market for old Deruta ceramics, vintage postcards and the occasional piece of wrought ironwork.

A handful of street-food vendors set up near the market perimeter serving porchetta sandwiches — the slow-roasted, herb-stuffed pork that is Umbria's greatest fast food — from converted vans with queues of locals that tell you everything you need to know.

Timing and Tips

Arrive before 9:00 to catch the freshest produce and the liveliest atmosphere; by noon many stalls begin packing up. The market is free to browse and entirely cash-friendly, though a few younger vendors now accept card.

Pair your market visit with a coffee at one of the bars on Piazza della Repubblica, a five-minute walk away, where you can sit outdoors and watch the town go about its morning.
