The View and When to Go
The belvedere sits at the northern tip of Montefalco's oval piazza, just beyond the Torre Comunale. In spring the valley below is a patchwork of green wheat, red poppies and the silver-grey of olive groves; in autumn the Sagrantino vines turn a deep crimson that is almost theatrical against the pale limestone hills.
Sunset is the prime time: the light turns the Valle Umbra amber and the silhouette of Assisi's basilica appears on the ridge to the north-west. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to claim a spot on the low wall and watch the colours shift.
Combining with Montefalco's Highlights
The Museo di San Francesco, just off Piazza del Comune, houses Benozzo Gozzoli's luminous 1452 fresco cycle on the Life of St Francis — arguably better preserved than the Assisi version and seen by a fraction of the visitors. Admission is €6.
