Altopiano di Colfiorito

Twenty kilometres east of Foligno on the SS77, the Altopiano di Colfiorito is a high karst plateau at 760 m that most tourists speed past on the way to the Adriatic coast — which is precisely why it remains one of Umbria's most rewarding natural escapes, with a protected wetland, rare orchids and winter crane migrations that feel genuinely wild.

The Palude di Colfiorito Nature Reserve

At the centre of the plateau sits the Palude di Colfiorito, a shallow lake and marsh listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. In spring the surrounding meadows erupt with Iris marsica — a rare endemic iris found almost nowhere else — and the air is thick with marsh harriers and reed warblers.

A flat, signed circular path of about 4 km loops around the wetland and is manageable for all fitness levels. Bring binoculars: the birdwatching is exceptional from March through May and again in October when migratory species stop over.

The Plateau Villages and History

The plateau is dotted with small stone villages — Colfiorito itself has a modest ethnographic museum dedicated to plateau life and the cultivation of the Patata Rossa di Colfiorito, a local red-skinned potato with IGP protected status that you will find on menus across Foligno.

The area was also an important Umbrian tribal settlement; the Museo Archeologico di Colfiorito displays votive bronzes and ceramics recovered from a pre-Roman sanctuary nearby, giving the landscape an additional layer of ancient depth.

When to Visit

Late April to early June is the prime window for wildflowers and birdlife. November through January brings flocks of common cranes stopping over during migration — hundreds of birds calling and circling above the marsh at dusk is an unforgettable sound.

The plateau is also a reliable cross-country skiing destination in heavy snow years; the flat terrain makes it accessible for beginners.
