Abbazia di Sassovivo
Perched on a wooded hillside 5 km east of Foligno, the Benedictine Abbazia di Sassovivo rewards the short drive up with one of the most beautiful Romanesque cloisters in all of Umbria and sweeping views across the Topino Valley that stretch on clear days to Assisi and Spello.
The Romanesque Cloister
Built in 1229 by Roman marble-workers, the cloister's 128 slender twin columns are inlaid with Cosmatesque mosaic work in geometric patterns of gold, red and black. Walking around the quadrangle in the morning light, when sun cuts diagonally across the arcades, is a genuinely meditative experience.
The abbey church preserves frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries and a serene, austere nave that feels completely untouched by tourism — because it mostly is. A small community of monks still lives here, and the silence is real.
The Views Over the Valley
From the terrace outside the abbey walls, the Topino Valley unfolds below in a patchwork of olive groves, sunflower fields and medieval hill towns. On a clear morning you can pick out the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli near Assisi and the white facades of Spello climbing their hillside.
A network of signed walking trails departs from the abbey through the surrounding oak and holm-oak forest — the Selva di Colfiorito trail system connects to wider Umbrian paths and is excellent for a half-day hike.
Getting There and When to Go
Drive or take a taxi from central Foligno — the road up is narrow but manageable. There is a small parking area just below the abbey. No regular bus service reaches the site.
Visit on a weekday morning for near-total solitude. Spring (April–May) is spectacular when wildflowers carpet the hillside; October brings golden foliage and the scent of wood smoke from the valley below.
