Palmeral de Elche (Palm Grove of Elche)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, the Palmeral de Elche is the largest palm grove in Europe, with more than 200,000 date palms stretching across the city in a living landscape that dates back to Moorish irrigation engineering. Walking its shaded avenues feels like stepping into a North African oasis dropped into the heart of Spain.
A Forest Born from Moorish Ingenuity
The grove was planted by Arab settlers over a thousand years ago using an intricate network of irrigation channels called 'sequioles' that still water the palms today. The system is so sophisticated it was preserved almost intact through the Reconquista and continues to function in the 21st century.
The Huerto del Cura, the most celebrated garden within the palmeral, houses the iconic Imperial Palm — a single trunk that fans into eight branches, planted around 1900 and named after Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Peacocks roam freely between the palms, and the garden's koi ponds and cactus collections make it a destination in its own right.
Timing Your Visit & Practical Tips
Visit in the golden hour before sunset when the light filters amber through the fronds and the heat of the Alicante plain softens into something almost gentle. The grove is at its most photogenic in late spring when the palms are lush and the surrounding flower beds are in full bloom.
The Palmeral Park (Parque Municipal) is free to enter and open around the clock, while the Huerto del Cura charges a small admission fee of around €7. Hire a bicycle from one of the rental points near the park entrance to cover the full grove efficiently — it spans several kilometres.
