The Misteri d'Elx: A Living Medieval Opera
Every 14 and 15 August, the basilica's interior transforms into a stage for the Misteri d'Elx (Mystery of Elche), a two-act sacred drama performed entirely in medieval Valencian that has been staged without interruption since the 15th century. The production features elaborate stage machinery, including a gilded cloud-shaped lift called the 'araceli' that descends from the cupola to carry singers representing angels.
Tickets for the official August performances are free but must be reserved months in advance through the Patronat del Misteri d'Elx. Outside August, the basilica hosts rehearsal performances called 'representació en petit format' that give visitors a condensed taste of the drama year-round.
Architecture & Visiting the Basilica
Construction began in 1672 on the site of a former mosque and continued for nearly a century, resulting in a harmonious late-baroque interior with a single nave, elaborate side chapels and the famous hydraulic trap door in the vault through which the araceli machinery operates. The blue ceramic dome, restored to its original Valencian tile pattern in the 20th century, is the building's most recognisable exterior feature.
Climb to the museum level above the nave for close-up views of the dome's interior and exhibits on the Misteri's costumes and stage machinery. The adjacent Museu de la Festa, just steps away on Carrer Major de la Vila, provides deep context with original props, historical manuscripts and a short audiovisual show.
