The original Dama de Elche now lives in Madrid's Museo Arqueológico Nacional, but the museum at L'Alcúdia displays a high-quality replica alongside the extraordinary range of Iberian, Roman and Bronze Age artefacts excavated from the same hill over more than a century of digs. The site sits on a tell — a layered mound of successive civilisations — that has yielded Phoenician ceramics, Roman mosaics and Iberian votive figurines in the same soil.
A guided tour of the active excavation trenches (available on weekends) lets you stand at the edge of ongoing digs and speak with archaeologists working to understand the full extent of the Iberian settlement that once occupied this hill. It is the kind of access that would be unthinkable at a more famous site.
Getting There & Combining With a Picnic
L'Alcúdia sits about 2 kilometres south of central Elche, easily reachable by bicycle along a flat road that passes through the edge of the palmeral. The surrounding agricultural land — flat, green and punctuated by palm clusters — makes for a scenic ride, and the site's shaded grounds are ideal for a picnic after the museum visit.
The museum shop sells a surprisingly good range of academic publications on Iberian culture and high-quality replica jewellery based on pieces found at the site — the earrings modelled on Iberian gold originals make a distinctive and lightweight souvenir.
