What to Buy and Taste
The market's ground floor is a mosaic of vegetable stalls piled with local artichokes from the Vega Baja, fat tomatoes and bunches of the thin green onions used in traditional Valencian cooking. Look for the date vendors who sell fresh and dried dates harvested directly from the Palmeral de Elche — a product almost impossible to find anywhere else in Europe.
On the upper gallery, deli counters sell locally produced 'ñora' dried peppers, saffron from nearby La Mancha, and 'salazones' — salt-cured fish products like mojama (cured tuna loin) and salt-packed roe that are a cornerstone of Alicante gastronomy. Buy a vacuum-packed slice of mojama to take home; it keeps for months and tastes extraordinary shaved thin over olive oil.
Market Rhythm & Surrounding Streets
The market is busiest between 09:00 and 13:00 on weekday mornings when stallholders are fully stocked and the atmosphere is at its most vivid. Saturday mornings bring extra vendors and a slightly festive energy worth experiencing even if you are not buying.
After shopping, the streets immediately surrounding the market — particularly Carrer de la Corredora — are lined with small tapas bars that open from mid-morning onwards. Pull up a stool at any one of them and order a 'cerveza' with a plate of boquerones en vinagre (anchovies in vinegar) for an authentic mid-morning break.
