Sidrería Casa Julio
Casa Julio on Calle El Pitu is the kind of no-frills sidrería that Asturian food lovers dream about — wooden tables, walls hung with fishing memorabilia, and a kitchen that lets the quality of the local catch speak entirely for itself. The house-poured natural cider and the arroz con bogavante (rice with lobster) are the two things you must order.
What to Eat
The menu is dictated by whatever came off the boats that morning, but reliable staples include merluza a la sidra (hake braised in cider), chipirones en su tinta (squid in ink) and percebes when in season — the barnacles here are harvested from the wild Asturian coast and taste of pure Atlantic brine.
For dessert, ask for arroz con leche, the Asturian rice pudding served with a caramelised sugar crust. It is deceptively simple and genuinely one of the best versions you will find anywhere in northern Spain.
The Cider Ritual
Natural Asturian cider (sidra natural) is poured from a height — the waiter raises the bottle above his head and pours into a wide-mouthed glass held low, aerating the liquid to release its sharp, funky apple character. You drink the small measure quickly before the bubbles dissipate, then tip the dregs on the floor as tradition demands.
Casa Julio keeps a good selection of local producers, and the staff are happy to guide you through the differences between a brut and a semi-sweet bottling if you ask.
