Cabo Vidio Lighthouse Walk
Most visitors to Cudillero never make the short drive to Cabo Vidio, a rugged headland 12 km to the west crowned by a working lighthouse and edged by some of the most vertiginous sea cliffs on the Cantabrian coast. The 4-km round-trip coastal walk here is one of Asturias's finest short hikes and remains almost entirely off the tourist radar.
The Walk
Park at the small lay-by signed Cabo Vidio off the AS-263 road and follow the grassy clifftop path westward. The trail passes through fragrant heathland of gorse and heather before the white-and-red lighthouse comes into view, perched dramatically above a 100-metre drop to the sea below.
On clear days the views extend east toward the Sierra del Sueve and west toward the headlands of Luarca. Dolphins and porpoises are regularly spotted in the waters below, and the cliffs host nesting cormorants and herring gulls throughout spring.
Practical Details
The path is unmarked but easy to follow — simply keep the cliff edge (safely) to your left. The terrain is grassy and can be slippery after rain, so hiking boots or trail runners are advisable.
There are no services at Cabo Vidio. The lighthouse itself is operational and not open to visitors, but the surrounding headland is freely accessible. Combine the walk with a swim at the tiny Playa de Aguilar nearby, a sheltered sandy cove at the base of the cliffs accessible via a steep path.
