Playa del Silencio (Beach of Silence)
A 25-minute drive west of Cudillero lies Playa del Silencio, arguably the most spectacular beach in Asturias — a horseshoe of dark sand enclosed by towering slate cliffs, with no bars, no sunbeds and no noise beyond the Atlantic swell. It earns its name every single day.
The Landscape
The beach is flanked by layered sedimentary rock formations that have been folded and tilted by geological forces into dramatic chevron patterns — a geologist's paradise and a photographer's dream. At low tide, a series of rock pools extends across the left flank of the cove, filled with sea anemones, small crabs and the occasional octopus.
The water is cold by Mediterranean standards (16–19°C in summer) but crystal clear, and the lack of crowds means you can often find a private patch of sand even in August if you arrive before 10 am or after 5 pm.
Getting There & Practicalities
From the village of Castañeras near Cudillero, follow signs to Playa del Silencio. A 15-minute walk down a well-maintained path through eucalyptus forest leads to the beach. The descent is moderate; the return climb is more demanding, so wear proper footwear.
There are no facilities on the beach itself — no toilets, no food, no shade structures. Bring everything you need, including drinking water, and take all rubbish back with you. This unspoiled quality is precisely what makes it worth the effort.
