Mercado de Abastos de Cudillero
Tucked just off the main road through the upper village, Cudillero's small but characterful covered market is where the town feeds itself — and where savvy visitors come to buy the freshest fish in Asturias straight from the people who caught it. On a good morning you will find percebes, nécoras (velvet crabs), fresh bonito and wild sea bass laid out on ice within hours of leaving the water.
What to Buy
The fish and shellfish stalls are the main draw, but the market also carries excellent local produce: Asturian cheeses including pungent Cabrales and creamy Gamonéu, jars of fabada bean stew ready to take home, local honey and bottles of sidra natural from nearby producers.
If you are self-catering, the fishmongers will clean and fillet your purchase on the spot. Ask for merluza del pincho — line-caught hake — which commands a premium but is noticeably superior in texture and flavour to trawl-caught fish.
Timing Your Visit
The market is liveliest between 9 am and 1 pm on weekdays, with Saturday morning being the busiest and most abundantly stocked session of the week. Arrive by 10 am on Saturdays for the best selection before the popular cuts sell out.
Even if you are not buying, a stroll through the market is a genuine window into daily Asturian life — fishermen dropping off crates, elderly locals debating the merits of different cheese producers, and the unhurried rhythm of a community that still eats entirely with the seasons.
