Restaurante El Marinero

El Marinero has been feeding fishermen and savvy visitors on the Costa Teguise seafront for decades, serving the kind of unfussy, ingredient-led Canarian seafood that makes you wonder why you ever eat anything else. The daily catch is chalked on a board each morning — whatever the boats brought in is what you eat.

What to Order

The vieja a la espalda — parrotfish butterflied and grilled over charcoal — is the signature dish and arguably the best single plate in Costa Teguise. The fish is sourced from local day-boats and arrives at the table with nothing more than mojo verde, a wedge of lemon and papas arrugadas: small Canarian potatoes boiled in heavily salted water until the skin wrinkles and crystallises.

For starters, the caldo de pescado (fish broth) is a deeply savoury, saffron-tinged bowl that locals order year-round regardless of the temperature. The gambas al ajillo — prawns sizzled in olive oil, garlic and guindilla chilli — arrive in a clay dish still spitting and are best mopped up with the crusty bread that comes with every table.

The Setting and the Vibe

Tables on the covered terrace look directly across the Avenida del Mar promenade to the sea, making it an ideal spot for a long, sun-drenched lunch. The interior is tiled and unpretentious — fishing nets on the walls, a cold cabinet displaying the day's fish at the entrance, staff who have worked here long enough to remember your order from last year.

Lunch is the main event: the kitchen is at its liveliest between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. when locals fill the back tables. Booking is advisable on Sundays when the market crowd arrives hungry.
