Mercado Artesanal de Costa Teguise
Every Sunday morning the central plaza of Costa Teguise transforms into a colourful open-air market where local artisans, farmers and food producers spread their wares beneath the palms. It is the most authentic shopping experience in the resort and a genuine window into island life.
What You'll Find on the Stalls
The market concentrates on handmade Canarian crafts: hand-painted ceramics, woven palm-leaf baskets, aloe vera cosmetics produced on the island and intricate lacework that echoes a centuries-old Lanzarote tradition. Several stalls sell locally made jewellery incorporating volcanic basalt and Lanzarote's distinctive green olivine stone.
Food stalls are equally rewarding — look for mojo rojo and mojo verde sauces bottled by home producers, rounds of fresh goat's cheese (queso de cabra) from the inland farms of Tinajo, and bags of gofio, the toasted grain flour that underpins Canarian cooking.
Making the Most of Market Morning
Arrive before 10 a.m. to beat the cruise-ship crowds and catch producers restocking their displays. The surrounding café terraces open early, so a coffee and a freshly made tortilla de papas while you browse is an entirely reasonable plan.
The market wraps up around 2 p.m., making it easy to combine with a late lunch at one of the seafront restaurants on Avenida del Mar just five minutes' walk away.
