Musée de la Pêche, Ville Close

Inside the Ville Close walls, the Musée de la Pêche is one of the most genuinely absorbing small museums in Brittany — a deep dive into the sardine-canning industry that made Concarneau wealthy and the blue-water tuna fishing that defined generations of local families. It is consistently overlooked by visitors who walk straight past it to the ramparts.

What's Inside

The museum is partly housed in a former arsenal and partly aboard the Hémérica, a real ocean-going tuna trawler moored alongside that you can explore below decks — the engine room, the fish hold and the cramped crew quarters tell a story no display case could match.

Scale models of every type of fishing vessel used in Breton waters over the past three centuries line the main gallery, alongside original nets, harpoons, navigation instruments and the logbooks of actual Concarneau fishing families.

A dedicated section covers the sardine-canning industry at its 19th-century peak, when Concarneau had over 50 canneries and the town's prosperity was measured in tins — the vintage label designs alone are worth the entry fee.

Why It Matters

Concarneau is still one of France's most active fishing ports — third largest by volume — so this museum is not nostalgic heritage but a living record of an industry that continues outside the window.

The multilingual panels are well written and the curators clearly love their subject; allow at least 90 minutes to do the collection justice.

Children are particularly captivated by the Hémérica — clambering through a real working trawler is a far more memorable experience than any interactive screen.
