Îles de Glénan Day Trip
Fourteen kilometres offshore from Concarneau, the Glénan archipelago offers something that seems impossible this far north: shallow lagoons of electric turquoise water, white sand beaches and a serenity that makes the mainland feel very far away. A day trip here is the highlight of many visitors' entire Brittany holiday.
The Islands Themselves
The archipelago comprises nine main islands; most day-trippers land on Saint-Nicolas, which has a small beach café, a diving school and the famous Centre Nautique des Glénans — one of Europe's oldest and most respected sailing schools.
The endemic Narcissus of the Glénan (Narcissus triandrus subsp. capax) flowers in April and May, drawing botanists from across Europe to what is otherwise a very small patch of Atlantic granite.
Snorkelling around the outer rocks reveals kelp forests, pollack and the occasional seal — bring a mask and fins if you have them.
Getting There
Vedettes de l'Odet and Compagnie des Glénans both run regular ferry services from Concarneau's harbour (Quai d'Aiguillon) from April through September; the crossing takes about 45 minutes.
Day-trip boats typically depart around 9–9:30 am and return by 5–6 pm, giving you a full day on the islands.
Pack everything you need — food, water, sunscreen — as supplies on the islands are minimal and expensive. The café on Saint-Nicolas serves basic snacks and cold drinks but that's your lot.
