Marché de Concarneau (Place Jean Jaurès)
Every Monday and Friday morning, Place Jean Jaurès and the surrounding streets fill with some of the most honest, sea-to-stall produce in Finistère. This is where local chefs, fishermen's families and sharp-eyed visitors all shop side by side.
What to Buy
The fish and shellfish stalls are the undisputed stars: look for line-caught dorade, spider crabs, and fat Belon oysters from nearby Riec-sur-Bélon — some vendors will shuck them on the spot with a squeeze of lemon.
Inland producers bring salted Breton butter in thick slabs, kouign-amann still warm from the oven, and buckwheat flour milled locally — all the building blocks of a perfect Breton picnic.
Seasonal vegetables from the Pays Bigouden hinterland — artichokes, cauliflowers, strawberries in June — fill out the stalls and remind you that Brittany feeds far more than just Paris.
How to Make the Most of It
Arrive by 8 am for the best selection; by 11 am the prime stalls are picked clean and vendors start packing up.
Pair your market haul with a coffee at one of the café terraces on the square — the people-watching alone is worth the trip.
Friday markets are generally larger and busier than Monday; both are held rain or shine, which in Brittany is a meaningful promise.
