Les Praz de Chamonix Village
While central Chamonix buzzes with ski-resort energy, the hamlet of Les Praz — just 3 km north along the valley — moves at an entirely different pace: wooden chalets with geranium-filled window boxes, a golf course backed by the Aiguilles Rouges and a cluster of excellent independent restaurants that attract knowing locals rather than passing tourists.
Exploring the Village
The village centres on a small square with a bakery, a fromagerie and the terrace of the Hôtel Les Lanchers, where locals gather for an evening Chartreuse or a glass of Apremont white wine. It is the kind of place where you hear more French than English, which in Chamonix in summer is saying something.
The Flégère gondola base station is right here, making Les Praz the ideal starting point for the Lac Blanc hike and the longer Balcon Nord trail that traverses the whole north side of the valley with continuous Mont Blanc views. The 18-hole Golf Club de Chamonix, one of the most scenic courses in Europe, is also based here — open to visitors from June to October.
Eating & Staying in Les Praz
Le Dahu restaurant on the main road through the village is a local institution for Savoyard fondues and grilled meats, with a terrace that faces directly toward the Aiguille du Midi — arguably the best free view in the valley with a glass of wine in hand.
Staying in Les Praz rather than central Chamonix cuts noise and crowds significantly, while the valley bus line 1 connects the hamlet to the town centre every 15–20 minutes until late evening, so you sacrifice nothing in terms of access.
