Aiguille du Midi Cable Car & Summit
Riding the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi is the single most dramatic thing you can do in Chamonix — a two-stage cable car that catapults you from the valley floor to a needle of granite at 3,842 metres in under 20 minutes. Up top, the panorama sweeps across Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and a frozen sea of glaciers that genuinely stops conversation.
The Ride & the Summit
The cable car departs from the central Chamonix station on Plan de l'Aiguille and climbs in two stages, the second of which is nearly vertical — your ears pop and the valley shrinks to a toy town below you.
At the summit, a network of walkways and a glass-floored 'Step into the Void' box let you peer straight down 1,000 metres of sheer cliff face. Dress in proper layers: even in July the temperature hovers around −10 °C up here.
From the Aiguille du Midi you can also board the Panoramic Mont Blanc gondola across to Pointe Helbronner in Italy — one of the great cross-border mountain journeys in Europe.
Practical Planning
Book tickets online well in advance, especially in July and August when queues at the Chamonix base station start before 7 am. The first cars leave around 8 am and last descent is typically around 4:30–5 pm depending on season.
If cloud rolls in — and it does — wait it out in the mid-station café at Plan de l'Aiguille, which has a sunny terrace and a direct view of the Mer de Glace glacier below.
