La Maison Carrier — Ferme Auberge
Tucked into a beautifully restored 17th-century farmhouse on the edge of Les Bossons hamlet, La Maison Carrier is the most atmospheric place in the Chamonix valley to eat traditional Savoyard cuisine — think bubbling raclette, hand-rolled pasta and slow-braised local lamb, all served in a room of honey-coloured timber and cowbells.
What to Order
The raclette here is made with Beaufort d'alpage melted tableside over a wood fire — richer and more complex than the processed version found in tourist fondue joints. Order it with cornichons, charcuterie and boiled new potatoes for the full experience.
The croûte au fromage — toasted bread buried under a molten blanket of local cheese and white wine — is the ideal lunch dish after a morning on the mountain. Leave room for the tarte aux myrtilles, a dense bilberry tart that tastes exactly like the Alps smell in August.
Atmosphere & Booking
The dining room occupies the original hay barn, with exposed stone walls, low beamed ceilings and a fireplace that blazes from October through April. In summer, a terrace opens with views toward the Bossons Glacier — one of the most scenic restaurant terraces in the valley.
Reservations are essential, particularly on weekends and throughout July and August. The restaurant is part of the Albert 1er hotel group and sits about 2 km from central Chamonix — a pleasant walk or a short taxi ride.
