Lac Blanc Hike via the Flégère Gondola
Lac Blanc is one of the most photographed spots in the entire Alps — a high-altitude lake at 2,352 m that reflects the full sweep of the Mont Blanc massif like a polished mirror — yet it remains surprisingly uncrowded compared to the cable-car summits. The hike from the top of the Flégère gondola takes just 1.5–2 hours each way and is accessible to any fit walker with good footwear.
The Route
Take the Télécabine de la Flégère from Les Praz de Chamonix (a 10-minute bus ride from the centre) to the Index mid-station at 1,877 m, then follow the well-signed trail northeast through dwarf pine and alpine meadows thick with gentian and edelweiss in July.
The final approach to Lac Blanc involves a short rocky scramble that rewards you with a sudden, theatrical reveal: the turquoise lake, the surrounding granite ridges and the entire Mont Blanc chain reflected in the water. It is genuinely one of those moments that makes you stop walking and just stare.
The Refuge du Lac Blanc sits right at the water's edge and serves simple hot meals and cold beers from June to September — earning its place as one of the best-positioned mountain huts in France.
When to Go & What to Bring
Mid-July to mid-September is the sweet spot: the trail is snow-free, the wildflowers are in bloom and the refuge is open. Sunrise visits are magical — the lake turns gold and the crowds are minimal before 8 am.
Wear proper hiking boots (the rocky final section punishes trainers), carry at least 1.5 litres of water and bring a windproof layer — the col above the lake funnels cold air even on warm valley days.
