Ski Touring the Sellaronda Circuit (Summer Hiking Version)
The Sellaronda is world-famous as a ski circuit in winter, but in summer it becomes a spectacular high-altitude hiking and cycling route linking four mountain passes — Passo Sella, Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo and Passo Pordoi — around the entire Sella massif. Canazei sits directly on the circuit, making it the ideal base for tackling one or all four passes on foot or by e-bike.
The Full Circuit on Foot
The complete summer circuit covers roughly 26 km with about 1,400 m of elevation gain — most fit hikers complete it in 7–9 hours, taking the cable cars where available to shorten ascents.
The section between Passo Sella and Passo Gardena offers the most dramatic scenery: a high traverse beneath the Sella Group's 500 m vertical walls with views north into the German-speaking Alto Adige valleys.
E-Bike Option & Practical Tips
Several Canazei rental shops (including Intersport Canazei on Via Roma) hire out e-mountain bikes perfectly suited to the circuit's gradients; most riders complete the loop in 4–5 hours with electric assist.
Start from Canazei clockwise (via Passo Pordoi first) to tackle the steepest climb while legs are fresh; the descent back into the Fassa valley on the Canazei side is a thrilling 12 km drop on good tarmac.
