Sentiero delle Leggende (Legend Trail), Campitello di Fassa
Just 4 km down the valley from Canazei, Campitello di Fassa hides one of the most charming short walks in the entire region — the Sentiero delle Leggende, a 3 km circular trail through ancient larch forest dotted with carved wooden sculptures illustrating Ladin myths about the Dolomites' origins. Almost no guidebook mentions it, yet it's free, easy and genuinely magical.
The Trail Itself
The path loops gently through old-growth larch trees whose bark glows rust-red in afternoon light; at each bend a new carved figure emerges from the wood — the pale king Laurino, the rose-garden fairy, the giant of the Catinaccio.
Elevation gain is minimal (under 100 m), making it suitable for families with young children and anyone wanting a meditative forest walk rather than a demanding hike.
Ladin Mythology Along the Way
The trail is a living introduction to Ladin legend: information panels in Ladin, Italian and German explain how the Rosengarten (Catinaccio) massif was once a magical rose garden turned to stone at sunset — a story that suddenly makes the mountain's famous alpenglow feel personal.
End the loop at the small clearing with a bench facing Col Rodella and the Sella Group — it's one of those quiet spots where you genuinely forget the modern world exists.
