Marmolada Glacier & Fedaia Lake
The Marmolada — the 'Queen of the Dolomites' — tops out at 3,343 m and cradles the range's largest glacier, while its meltwater feeds the stunning turquoise Lago di Fedaia right at its base. The lake and the cable-car village of Malga Ciapela are only 18 km from Canazei, making this an unmissable half-day excursion.
The Glacier Cable Car
Three successive gondola stages lift you from Malga Ciapela to Punta Rocca at 3,265 m, where a WWI tunnel museum is carved directly into the ice — a sobering reminder that the entire Marmolada front was fought here in 1915–18.
Even in August, the glacier terrace is a landscape of blue crevasses and wind-polished ice; the view south toward the Venetian plain on a clear day stretches for over 100 km.
Lago di Fedaia at Sunrise
The lake's milky-turquoise colour comes from glacial silt suspended in the water — it shifts from jade green to deep teal depending on the light and season.
Park at the dam wall before 7 a.m. and you'll have the reflections of the Marmolada entirely to yourself; by mid-morning tour buses arrive and the magic dims considerably.
