Passo Pordoi Cable Car & Summit Terrace
At 2,950 m, the Sass Pordoi plateau delivers what many photographers call the single greatest 360-degree view in the entire Dolomites — a flat, walk-able moonscape ringed by the Sella Group, Marmolada glacier and Civetta. Ride the Funivia Sass Pordoi from Passo Pordoi, just 12 km from Canazei, and step into a world that feels genuinely otherworldly.
The Ride Up
The cable car climbs 600 vertical metres in under five minutes, swinging past sheer limestone walls streaked ochre and grey — have your camera ready before you even reach the top.
Once on the plateau you can wander the marked flat trail to the Rifugio Maria refuge, order a hot chocolate and watch clouds roll through the valleys thousands of metres below.
Best Light & Timing
Sunrise and the two hours before sunset paint the Marmolada's ice face in shades of rose and amber — serious photographers book the first or last cable-car run of the day.
Summer weekends fill quickly; arriving on a weekday morning before 9 a.m. gives you the terrace almost entirely to yourself and the clearest mountain air.
