Salnés Coast & Praia de Castrelo
Praia de Castrelo sits just 2 km south of Cambados town centre, a broad arc of pale sand backed by low dunes and Galician scrub that feels worlds away from the busy rías further south. On weekdays outside August, you may have its 600 metres of shoreline almost entirely to yourself.
The Beach and Its Setting
The beach faces west into the Ría de Arousa, meaning the water is calmer than the open Atlantic coast and the sunsets — directly over the water — are spectacular. A wooden boardwalk crosses the dunes from the small car park, keeping the fragile vegetation intact.
At low tide, the sand flats extend far out into the ría and local mariscadoras wade through the shallows raking for clams — one of the most quietly memorable sights in coastal Galicia.
Walking the Salnés Coastline
A signed coastal footpath connects Castrelo northward toward the Cambados waterfront promenade and then continues to the small harbour of Tragove, passing eucalyptus groves, granite sea walls and working mussel platforms. The full out-and-back walk is about 6 km on mostly flat terrain.
Birdwatchers should bring binoculars: the inter-tidal mudflats around Tragove attract dunlin, grey plover and little egret in autumn and winter migration, and the ría is one of the best spots in Galicia for watching cormorants drying their wings on the bateas.
