Mercado Municipal de Cambados
Tucked behind the main street, Cambados' covered municipal market is where local fisherwomen — the legendary redeiras and mariscadoras — sell the morning's catch straight from the Ría de Arousa. It is small, unhurried and completely untheatrical.
What to Look For
The stalls pivot with the tides and the season, but you can almost always find percebes (barnacles) prised from the Atlantic rocks at dawn, fat zamburiñas (queen scallops) and the clams — berberechos and ameixas — that define Galician coastal cooking.
Alongside the seafood counter, local women sell bunches of grelos (turnip greens), tetilla cheese and home-pressed Albariño in unlabelled bottles — the kind of market detail that makes a trip feel real.
How to Make the Most of It
Go between 09:00 and 11:30 on a Tuesday or Saturday when supply is fullest. Many stalls close by noon once the best produce is gone.
If you are self-catering, ask a vendor to clean and open the clams for you — it is standard practice and they will do it cheerfully while you wait.
