San Fermín de Aldapa Hermitage & Pilgrimage (July 7)
Every year on 7 July — the same day Pamplona's San Fermín bulls thunder down the Calle Estafeta — the tiny village of Burguete stages its own centuries-old pilgrimage to the hermitage of San Fermín de Aldapa on the hillside above town. It is intimate, local and completely unaffected by tourism, offering a window into Navarrese rural devotion that the crowds 47 kilometres south will never see.
The Procession
At around 09:00 the entire village — perhaps 300 people, many in traditional Navarrese white-and-red — processes up the forest track to the small 17th-century stone hermitage of San Fermín de Aldapa, singing traditional jotas and carrying the saint's image. The walk takes about 40 minutes each way through beech woodland.
A short outdoor Mass is celebrated at the hermitage, followed by a communal picnic on the surrounding meadow. Locals bring txakoli wine, cider, homemade chorizo and the flat corn-bread called talo — visitors who show up are invariably offered a share.
The Afternoon Festivities
After the descent, the afternoon fills with pelota vasca matches in the village frontón (the traditional Basque ball-court on the main street), folk dancing and a public txikiteo — a bar-crawl of the village's three taverns, each serving a different pintxo round.
The evening closes with a bonfire and improvised aurresku dancing in the square. It is the kind of fiesta that has been happening in Navarrese villages for four hundred years, and the fact that almost no guidebook mentions it makes it all the more special.
