Irati Beech Forest & Reservoir
Stretching across the Pyrenean foothills just minutes from Burguete, the Irati Forest is one of the largest primeval beech-and-fir woodlands in Europe, a cathedral of twisted trunks and acid-green light. In autumn the canopy ignites in amber and copper; in spring, mist drifts between silver beeches like slow breath.
Into the Forest
The Embalse de Irabia reservoir sits at the heart of the forest and is the easiest entry point, reachable by a scenic road from Burguete in about 20 minutes. A flat, well-marked loop trail circles the water's edge, offering reflections of fir-covered slopes that look almost Scandinavian.
Deeper trails branch off toward the Meseta de Irati plateau, where ancient beech trees grow so dense the sky almost disappears. Waymarkers are reliable, but carry a paper map — mobile signal drops to nothing inside the canopy.
When to Go & What to Bring
October is the undisputed star month: the beech leaves turn every shade between gold and burgundy, and the forest floor is a soft carpet of fallen colour. July and August are cooler here than anywhere else in Navarre, making it a perfect summer escape from lowland heat.
Wear waterproof boots year-round — the forest floor stays damp and mossy even in summer. The Casas de Irati visitor hut near the reservoir sells hot coffee and basic supplies on weekends from June to October.
