Irati Beech Forest & Reservoir
Stretching across the Pyrenean foothills just minutes from Burguete, the Irati Forest is one of the largest primeval beech-and-fir woodlands in Europe — a place where the canopy closes overhead like a green cathedral ceiling. In autumn the colours rival anything in New England; in summer the cool shade is pure relief.
Into the Forest
The Irati massif covers roughly 17,000 hectares straddling Navarre and the French Basque Country, making it the second-largest beech forest in Europe after Białowieża. Marked trails fan out from the Orbaitzeta car park and the Irati reservoir dam, ranging from gentle lakeside strolls to full-day ridge walks above 1,400 metres.
The reservoir itself — Embalse de Irabia — mirrors the surrounding beeches on calm mornings, producing mirror-image reflections that photographers chase from first light. Rent a rowing boat at the small jetty near the Casas de Irati refuge to get the best angle on the water.
Wildlife & Seasons
Irati shelters one of the Iberian Peninsula's last breeding populations of the Cantabrian capercaillie, and golden eagles ride the thermals above the limestone ridges. Roe deer are commonly spotted at dusk on the forest margins near Ochagavía road.
Peak colour runs from mid-October to early November, when the beeches turn copper and gold. Spring brings carpets of wood anemones beneath the bare canopy in April, while July and August offer cool hiking temperatures rarely exceeding 22 °C even at valley level.
