Río Urrobi Fly-Fishing Stretch
The Río Urrobi flows cold and clear through the meadows just south of Burguete, its waters fed by Pyrenean snowmelt and shaded by alder and ash. This is the river Hemingway fished obsessively in 1925, and the stretch between Burguete and Espinal remains one of the most beautiful and productive wild-trout rivers in northern Spain.
The River & Its Fish
The Urrobi holds a healthy population of wild brown trout (trucha común), and the section from the bridge at Burguete downstream to Espinal is designated a catch-and-release zone, which means the fish are numerous and relatively unafraid. Even non-anglers will find the bankside walk — flat, grassy and lined with wildflowers in June — one of the loveliest short walks in the area.
The water is gin-clear in summer, and if you stand quietly on the old stone bridge at the edge of the village you can watch trout holding in the current below you, a sight that makes it immediately obvious why Hemingway kept coming back.
Fishing Permits & Practicalities
To fish legally you need a Navarre regional fishing licence (licencia de pesca) plus a permit for the specific trout zone (coto), both obtainable online via the Gobierno de Navarra website or at the Roncesvalles tourist office. The season runs from the second Sunday in March to the last Sunday in August.
Local guide services based in Pamplona offer half-day fly-fishing sessions on the Urrobi and Irati rivers, including equipment rental and permit assistance — a good option if you want to fish without the paperwork.
