Pont Coudé Viewpoint
The Pont Coudé — literally the 'elbow bridge' — is a 16th-century angled stone bridge that crosses the Dronne at a sharp kink, giving photographers a unique diagonal composition with the abbey, the mill and the weeping willows all perfectly aligned. At golden hour the whole scene turns amber and the river goes mirror-still.
The Perfect Composition
Stand on the bridge's downstream parapet just before sunset and you have the abbey bell tower dead-centre, its reflection stretching towards you along the Dronne. The old moulin (mill) building to the left adds a rustic counterpoint, and in spring yellow flag iris lines the banks.
For an even higher vantage point, follow the footpath that climbs the limestone cliff behind the abbey to a small terrace above the troglodyte caves. From here you can see the full island layout of the town, the meander of the river and the patchwork of vegetable gardens on the far bank.
Dawn vs Dusk
Dawn visits in summer reward you with mist rising off the Dronne and zero tourist traffic — the silence is broken only by kingfishers. Bring a wide-angle lens and a tripod for long-exposure shots of the glassy water.
At dusk the abbey is subtly floodlit from late spring through September, and the reflection in the millpond becomes a luminous double image. The café terraces on the quai are the ideal spot to watch the light fade with a glass of Bergerac rosé in hand.
