Les Jardins de Brantôme
Perched on the bank of the Dronne with terrace tables that practically overhang the water, Les Jardins de Brantôme delivers classical Périgord cooking — duck magret, foie gras poêlé, walnut-crusted trout from local rivers — with a view of the abbey that makes every dish taste better. It's the kind of lunch that stretches happily into mid-afternoon.
The Menu & Signature Dishes
The set lunch menu (formule déjeuner) is exceptional value: typically three courses for around €28–€35, anchored by a terrine of duck foie gras with Monbazillac jelly, followed by a magret de canard with cèpe mushroom sauce and a wedge of walnut tart to finish. The wine list leans heavily on nearby Bergerac and Pécharmant appellations.
The trout — sourced from the clear tributaries of the Dronne — is a lighter option, often pan-fried with almonds and a beurre noisette, and it pairs beautifully with a carafe of local Bergerac Sec white. Ask the waiter which fish came in that morning; the answer is usually 'this one'.
Terrace & Atmosphere
The riverside terrace is shaded by plane trees and bordered by clipped box hedges, with the abbey bell tower visible across the water. Tables are set with proper linen and the service is unhurried — this is not a tourist trap but a genuine restaurant with a loyal local following.
Reservations are strongly advised in July and August, when every terrace table is claimed by 12:30. In shoulder season (May, June, September) you can often walk in for lunch, but calling ahead the morning of your visit is still wise.
