Brantôme Friday Morning Market
Every Friday from roughly 8:00 to 13:00, the Place du Marché and surrounding lanes fill with stalls selling walnut oil pressed in the valley, fat Périgord strawberries, wheels of Cabécou goat's cheese and jars of foie gras made on farms you can see from the road. It's small, authentic and almost entirely local.
What to Buy
The walnut oil from the Moulin de la Tour at Sainte-Nathalène is sometimes sold here by a local reseller — a nutty, amber oil that transforms a simple green salad. Look also for conserves of duck confit in their own fat, sold in thick glass jars by the farm families who raised the birds.
In season (May–June) the strawberry stalls are extraordinary: Périgord strawberries, particularly the Gariguette variety, are smaller, more perfumed and far sweeter than supermarket fruit. Vendors will let you taste before you buy — a ritual that slows you down in the best possible way.
The Cheese & Truffle Corner
A handful of fromagerie stalls cluster near the church wall, offering aged Tomme du Périgord, fresh chèvre rolled in herbs, and the creamy Cabécou rounds that are best eaten warm, drizzled with honey, on a slice of walnut bread. Ask the vendor which are ready to eat today versus which need another day or two.
In winter (December–February) a small truffle market operates on Friday mornings alongside the regular stalls — a serious, hushed affair where local trufficulteurs sell Tuber melanosporum by the gram. Even a 10g sliver will perfume a scrambled egg beyond recognition.
