Château de Bourdeilles

Just 10 km downstream from Brantôme along the Dronne, the village of Bourdeilles hides one of the most dramatic castle complexes in the entire Dordogne: a medieval fortress and a Renaissance château sitting side by side on a rocky promontory above the river, yet visited by a fraction of the crowds that swamp Beynac or Les Eyzies. The Renaissance wing contains a museum of medieval furniture so fine

Two Castles for the Price of One

The older, 13th-century keep was built by the Talleyrand family and offers a vertiginous climb to a panoramic platform over the Dronne valley and the village mill below. The adjoining Renaissance château was begun in 1530 by Jacquette de Montbron as a gift to impress Catherine de Médicis — the queen never came, and the building was never fully finished, which gives it an oddly poignant, suspended quality.

Inside the Renaissance wing, the Musée de Sculpture et de Mobilier Médiéval houses an astonishing collection of Flemish tapestries, carved choir stalls and gilded Spanish furniture donated to the state in the 1960s. The Golden Salon, with its painted ceiling and Flemish painted panels, is the highlight.

The Village & Mill

The village of Bourdeilles itself is tiny — a cluster of honey-stone houses, a Romanesque church and a working mill on the weir — and almost entirely free of tourist infrastructure, which is precisely its charm. Walk the footpath along the river bank below the castle walls for the best exterior photographs.

Combine Bourdeilles with the canoe route from Brantôme for a perfect full day: paddle down in the morning, picnic on the gravel beach, explore the castle in the afternoon, then arrange a shuttle back. The two sites are natural companions.
