Dronne Valley Canoe Route
Renting a canoe or kayak from one of the hire points on the Dronne and paddling the stretch between Brantôme and Bourdeilles (about 13 km downstream) is the single best way to understand why this valley is called the Périgord Vert. The river is clear, gentle and fringed with kingfishers, grey herons and riverside meadows that smell of wild mint.
The Route
The classic half-day paddle from Brantôme to Bourdeilles takes roughly 3–4 hours at a leisurely pace, passing under ancient stone bridges, beside the gardens of old manor houses and through stretches of overhanging alder and willow that tunnel the river into cool green shade. The current is gentle enough for beginners and children.
About halfway, a gravel beach near the hamlet of Lisle makes a natural lunch stop — pack a picnic from the Friday market and pull up on the stones for a swim. The water is clean, cool and shallow enough to stand in mid-river in summer.
Wildlife & Best Season
The Dronne is one of the best rivers in the Dordogne for spotting the common kingfisher: look for electric-blue flashes low over the water, especially in the early morning. Grey herons stand motionless in the shallows, otters are occasionally seen at dawn, and the meadows along the bank are rich with orchids in May and June.
The season runs May to October; June and September offer the best balance of warm weather, clear water and manageable crowds. July and August are busiest — the river can feel like a motorway of inflatables on peak weekends, so aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday departure.
