Vliegenbos & Buiksloterham Green Corridor
Tucked immediately behind the ferry docks of Amsterdam Noord, Vliegenbos is a genuine old-growth urban forest of oak, beech and birch covering 46 hectares — one of the oldest public parks in Amsterdam and almost entirely unknown to tourists who pour off the ferry toward the A'DAM Tower. Walking & Cycling the Forest
A network of unpaved paths winds through the forest past a camping site that has been welcoming cyclists and backpackers since 1932. The trees are dense enough that even on a bright summer day the interior feels cool and dappled, with wood pigeons calling overhead and grey herons stalking the drainage ditches.
The forest connects southward into the broader Buiksloterham green corridor, a patchwork of community gardens, urban farms and wildflower meadows that has sprung up as the old industrial land is slowly rewilded. Pick up the cycling route signposted 'Groene Long Noord' at the forest's southern edge.
Birdwatching & Seasonal Highlights
Spring brings a reliable flush of migratory warblers and the forest floor carpets itself in wild garlic and wood anemone from March to May. Bring binoculars — the IJ waterfront immediately north of the forest is a stop-off point for common terns, great crested grebes and, in winter, smew ducks.
Autumn is arguably the finest season: the beech canopy turns amber and copper, the camping site empties out and the whole forest takes on the quality of a Flemish landscape painting. A Sunday morning walk here before the rest of the city wakes up is quietly extraordinary.
