NDSM Wharf (NDSM-werf)
Once the largest shipyard in the Netherlands, NDSM-werf is now Amsterdam's most electrifying creative district — a vast post-industrial playground of street art murals, artist studios, vintage container offices and a free-roaming colony of cats. The sheer scale of the repurposed dry-dock hall, now called the Kunststad (Art City), makes every first visit feel like stepping into a dystopian film set
Street Art & Kunststad
The Kunststad warehouse is a cavernous multi-storey structure where over 200 artists, theatre groups and startups have built their own ramshackle studios inside the shell of the old assembly hall. Visitors can wander freely during open hours and peer into active workshops.
Outside, the wharf's concrete walls, cranes and decommissioned ships are covered in world-class graffiti and murals commissioned through the annual NDSM Street Art festival. Bring a wide-angle lens — the scale defeats a standard phone frame.
Events, Flea Markets & Food Trucks
IJ-Hallen, Europe's largest flea market, takes place at NDSM roughly once a month, drawing 75,000 visitors over a weekend to rummage through 750 stalls of vintage clothing, furniture, records and curiosities.
On non-market weekends the wharf hosts festivals like Amsterdam Dance Event satellite stages, Robodock and Pllek's outdoor terrace events. The Pllek beach bar and restaurant, built from recycled shipping containers, is open daily and serves excellent Dutch-inflected comfort food with sand between your toes.
Getting There & Practical Tips
A free GVB ferry departs from behind Centraal Station (pier 2) roughly every 15 minutes, taking about 15 minutes to reach NDSM. It is one of the most scenic free rides in any European city.
Wear sturdy shoes — the wharf's terrain is cobblestone, gravel and uneven concrete. Allow at least three hours to do the area justice.
