Torre Normanna di Maiori
The tower stands at the edge of Maiori's wide beach, cylindrical and stone-grey, older than almost anything else on this coast. Built sometime between 1250 and 1300, it was raised to watch for Saracen raiders coming in off the Tyrrhenian — the largest Norman watchtower on the Amalfi Coast, its counter-scarp crenellation and five-loophole embrasure still readable in the masonry.
Today it operates as a restaurant, managed by the Proto brothers since 2008, and the Norman hall with its stone vaults now holds dinner tables rather than garrison soldiers. The Bellavista terrace looks straight out over the Gulf of Maiori. Artists were painting this silhouette as early as 1777; the tower hasn't moved.

Regulars are specific about one thing: book the terrazza or scogliera seating and say so clearly when you reserve — 'terrazza/scogliera' in your message. Sea-view tables go fast in high season and the difference between a cliff-side seat and an interior one is considerable. Lunch service, noon to half-two, tends to be quieter than dinner.
The story behind Torre Normanna di Maiori
The tower was constructed in the latter half of the 13th century — local sources place it between 1250 and 1300 — as a coastal defence against the pirate raids that threatened Amalfi Coast settlements throughout the medieval period. Its scale, unusual even among watchtowers, likely reflects the strategic importance of controlling Maiori's broad beach, the widest landing point on the coast.
The structure combines a cylindrical Angevin lower section with a later viceregal double-height addition, evidence of its long service life. By 1777 it was already a subject for painters, and printed images from 1817 confirm its prominence in the town's identity. The Proto brothers, who had previously run L'Arsenale restaurant in nearby Minori for two decades, took over management in 2008 and converted it to its current use.

SITA Sud buses run along the SS163 from Amalfi (around 20 minutes) and Salerno (around an hour). Seasonal ferries connect Maiori from April to October. The exterior costs nothing to see; the restaurant requires a reservation. Allow 15–30 minutes outside, or a full meal indoors.
The Amalfi Coast runs warm from late spring through early autumn; Easter to August brings the most visitors and the fullest ferry schedule. Shoulder months — April, May, September, October — offer calmer conditions along the waterfront and easier access to terrace seating.

My goodness do not miss this spot for swimming in addition to dining. We arrived by boat the day before our dinner reservation and swam from the boat to the grotto. There aren’t words to describe what an incredible experience that was - from the color and temperature of the water to the beautiful sea gulls to the little treasures we found ashore. The views from the water are as amazing as from the restaurant up top. Looking down at our swimming spot from the magnificent day prior was a magical feeling. The food was incredible the sunset and views even more so. Yes, expensive but worth every euro! Best eggplant parm of my life! Some top lifetime memories made here!
We had a wonderful experience at Torre Normanna. We emailed in advance to make a reservation for the beach club and arrived to spend time by the water before lunch. The beach club is beautiful. We had lounge chairs on the rocky terrace on the south side of the castle. We had been hoping for the private beach on the north side with the cave, but it does not open for the season until 1 June. We found this out when we arrived; it is not explained on the website. We were there on 27 May but the staff made sure we had a relaxing experience on the side with rocks instead. I am not sure if it is always like this, but the cost of the beach club comes with a sort of credit toward food and drink. Be sure to email and ask about it. After a while by the water, we went upstairs to the castle for lunch. The view was incredible. For the best experience, be sure to have a long traditional Italian lunch with multiple courses, dessert, limoncello, and espresso. Don’t rush it. We were there with our children and they had fun. The staff treated them very nice. There is not a lot of parking available. However, we were given a rare spot out front. This is because we arrived early at 11:30 am, our car was very small, and we had an advance reservation for the beach club and restaurant. You might get lucky with a spot, but be prepared to likely have to park in Maiori and walk up to Torre Normanna. The historical castle was incredibly beautiful. Even the toilets had history including the original stone windows. Make a reservation, have leisurely plans, and enjoy.

What a special experience in our visit to Maiori! The venue is flush with history, the sounds of a powerful ocean, and an elegant dining experience. The food was exceptional from appetizer to main course to dessert and aperitif! The most special aspect though is the staff! Their service was impeccable as their family business came alive to give us a warm and family gathering feel to our dinner! Bravo to Ivano, Daniella, Massimo, Gino, and even Mom! Likely the most immersive restaurant, we’ve ever had the pleasure to dine at, incredible food and service in a 14th century Norman fortress. Was good value too, a must if you like to build unforgettable memories.
