Fiume Reginna Maior (River Mouth Area)
The Reginna Maior meets the sea at Maiori with little ceremony — a wide, shallow river mouth that splits the town's longest beach stretch on the entire Amalfi Coast. The name has been here since the Romans arrived in the 3rd century BC and called the settlement Rheginna Maior, distinguishing it from the smaller Rheginna Minor downstream at Minori. That ancient distinction survives in the Corso Reginna, the main street running inland from the shore, where the river's old logic still organises the town.
The mouth itself is the kind of place you walk past on the way to somewhere else and then find yourself returning to — watching the water flatten into the sea, the beach widening on either side, the hills pressing close behind.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who come back tend to time it around the lemon harvest, May through July, when donkeys and farmers work the terraced groves above town and the fruit moves through the streets. Stand near the river mouth in the early morning, before the beach fills, and the whole valley behind it is briefly, clearly legible.
The story behind Fiume Reginna Maior (River Mouth Area)
The Romans gave the river its recorded name — Rheginna Maior — when they absorbed the settlement in the 3rd century BC, the 'Maior' a practical distinction from the smaller river town to the west. By the 9th century, Maiori had become the administrative and maritime heart of the Duchy of Amalfi: its admiralty, customs house, salt market, and arsenals all operated here. The town was sacked by Pisans in 1268 and elevated to royal city by King Philip IV in 1662.
The river itself has not always been benign. In 1954, the Reginna torrent swelled into a catastrophic alluvione, sending mud flows through the town in one of the Amalfi Coast's most destructive floods. The wide, tamed mouth you see today is partly a consequence of that reckoning.
Good to know
The SITA bus between Salerno and Amalfi stops in Maiori every 30–60 minutes; buy tickets before boarding at any tabaccheria or bar. Ferries run April–October. Autumn is quieter and the sea stays warm well into October.
Spring — April through June — brings temperatures around 18–25°C and thin crowds, making it the most comfortable time to walk the riverbank and surrounding trails. July and August push daily highs to 33°C; the beach draws serious summer crowds. September and October offer warm sea water and noticeably quieter mornings. Heavy rain concentrates in November through February.

Had such an amazing stay here. They upgraded our room since our flight was delayed and our original room we booked was given away. Room was stunning! Spotless and the view from the panoramic windows was incredible. Nice newly furnished and a beautiful rainfall shower. We could see fireworks most nights from our balcony. Private beach you can access by buying a pass (i believe 10 euros a day for the pass). Walking distance from many restaurants and shops. The pool was gorgeous, spotlessly clean and had plenty of nice seating around it. Diving board as well. Front desk staff were amazing, friendly helpful and spoke multiple languages. Room service, restaurant, bar, everything you need at the hotel and all of it was perfect. No complaints at all, can't recommend enough.

Our 9-night stay at the Reginna Palace Hotel was truly wonderful. The hotel combines a perfect location in Maiori with warm hospitality and an authentic Italian atmosphere. A very special thank you goes to the outstanding restaurant team — Angela, Annabel, Danka and Vincenzo — whose professionalism, kindness and attention made every breakfast and dinner a pleasure. We were equally impressed by the excellent cuisine prepared by the talented kitchen team: Guido, Damiano, Marco and Fabio. Every meal was refined, fresh and beautifully prepared. We loved Māiori and we loved the Reginna Palace Hotel. We had a great room with an amazing view and huge deck. The staff were really friendly, happy to chat, and very good at what they did. The pool was a nice bonus in a very pleasant setting and the food was excellent. We rated the hotel restaurant as our favourite in Maiori and we found some others that were very good too. Being beachfront was a bonus as the hotel’s location was directly across the road to the beach and also beside the main shopping street. We took ferries as our form of travel and they were a 400-500m walk. If and when we return to the Amalfi Coast we will certainly stay at the Reginna.
The hotel itself was fine, clean room, friendly enough staff. I didn’t think breakfast was anything amazing. I want to add some notes for others that I know is out of the hotel’s control but worth noting…We checked in on a Sunday evening and there was a DJ playing LOUD music across the street at the beach until about 9pm. I asked the front desk when it would end and they said they didnt know and it happens on weekends during summer. The music was literally shaking our room. If it had not turned off by bedtime i likely would’ve needed to change hotels. I’m happy we were not here on a weekend.
