Santuario di Montevergine (Avellino city chapel)
From Avellino's streets, you can pick out the white silhouette of Montevergine against the Partenio mountains — a landmark that has drawn pilgrims up that ridge since 1124. The sanctuary sits at 1,270 metres above the town of Mercogliano, and the easiest way up is a seven-minute funicular ride on one of Europe's steepest inclines, inclining at up to 64 degrees.
At the summit you find two basilicas side by side: the Baroque Basilica Antica, its high altar inlaid with mother-of-pearl, lapis lazuli and agate, and the Neo-Romanesque New Cathedral completed in 1961 to a design by Florestano Di Fausto. The painting that draws most visitors is inside the old basilica — a late-13th-century Madonna by Montano di Arezzo, known locally as Mamma Schiavona.

The story behind Santuario di Montevergine (Avellino city chapel)
Saint William of Vercelli, a hermit monk born in 1085, founded the sanctuary after a journey of Marian devotion led him to the Partenio massif. The first church was consecrated in the 1120s, built near the ruins of a temple of Cybele. The Benedictine community that grew around it survived the collapse of the ancient basilica in 1629; architect Giacomo Conforti oversaw its reconstruction by 1645, giving it the Baroque character the interior still carries.
The site accumulated unusual chapters: declared a national monument in 1869, it quietly sheltered the Holy Shroud of Turin between 1939 and 1946 to protect it from Nazi seizure. The funicular opened in 1956, and the new basilica — designed by Florestano Di Fausto in Romanesque forms, 54 metres long — was completed in 1961.

The sanctuary is open Monday–Friday 9:00–17:00, weekends until 18:00. The museum runs reduced hours outside June–September and is weekends-only in winter. The abbey palace is largely closed to visitors — monks live under claustral discipline — but the first floor and pharmacy can be seen by appointment on Saturday afternoons or Monday mornings.
Summer brings clear mountain air and beech forest shade at elevation; autumn turns the slopes yellow and red. Winter snow can make access difficult, and the funicular may be affected — worth checking ahead if you're visiting between December and March.

A sanctuary on the top of the mountain. That's the Italian way of building churches. Created around 1200's-1500's this is the most beautiful place to pray and contemplate the beauty of the nature,fresh air, and a magnificent landscape view of cities such us Mercogliano, summomte and Avellino. That's not all, from here, you can see the naples beach and island and the volcano. Moreover, the sanctuary is full of history and beautiful images.
Phenomenal area to visit. Much lower temperatures than the cities below. Recommend bundling up. Absolutely worth the visit!!!!
Very beautiful and peaceful. Great views and cool breeze! Restaurant was closed when we went. Take water. Dress modestly or they give you paper cover ups to go in.
Emozionante, facilmente raggiungibile, ben organizzato, pulito. Mi è piaciuta moltissimo la cripta con le reliquie dei Santi, in particolare San Modestino. Exciting, easily accessible, well organized, clean. I really liked the crypt with the relics of the saints, especially San Modestino. On the spot you will find a bar, stalls with local products. Spannend, leicht zugänglich, gut organisiert, sauber. Mir gefiel die Krypta mit den Reliquien der Heiligen, vor allem San Modestino, wo es eine Bar und Stände mit lokalen Produkten gibt Захватывающий, легкодоступный, хорошо организованный, чистый. Мне очень понравился склеп с мощами святых, особенно Сан-Модестино. На месте вы найдете бар, киоски с местными продуктами.
Nice place to visit. If you don't want to hassle with italian traffic just take cableway from the bottom of the mountain.
