Villa Comunale di Avellino
On the upper stretch of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, the Villa Comunale opens behind a gate that most people walking past don't bother to push. Inside, old plane trees and lindens spread wide enough to block out the surrounding city — not completely, but enough. The air is noticeably cooler under them in summer.
This is Avellino's public garden, and it has been exactly that since its inauguration on 31 July 1850. It's a place where the city comes to sit rather than to see, which makes it a different kind of destination than the landmarks clustered nearby.

People who pass through more than once tend to use the Via Cavour entrance, which drops you directly under the older trees without the walk from Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The garden stays open until 23:00, so an evening visit — when the heat has backed off and the benches fill with locals — is a better version of the place than the midday one.
The story behind Villa Comunale di Avellino
The garden began as a project of the Provincial Council of Principato Ultra, which established it in 1819 as a botanical garden for the province. Practical work on the plantings didn't start until 1839, directed by Federico Cassitto — an economist rather than a horticulturalist, which perhaps explains the garden's unfussy, functional character. The plane trees and lindens he oversaw are still the dominant presence.
After its formal inauguration in 1850, the villa remained under provincial administration for more than six decades before transferring to the municipality in 1916 for unrestricted public use. In 1956, the Ministry of Public Instruction placed it under protection — a recognition that what had grown here over a century was worth keeping.

Entry is free. The main entrance sits on upper Corso Vittorio Emanuele II; a second gate opens onto Via Cavour. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In July and August, midday temperatures can reach 37–40°C, so arrive in the morning or after 18:00.
Spring (mid-April to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the easiest conditions — mild temperatures and the trees at their fullest. Summer is genuinely hot, with daytime highs regularly above 36°C; the garden's shade helps, but mornings and evenings are the sensible times to visit. Avellino sees more winter rain and occasional frost than coastal Campania, and snow is possible between December and February.

An excellent City-Center green Park offering many shadowy and fresh relaxing Spots under enormeous - ancestral Trees, on some juicy grass, on public Benches or on the Childrens Carousel. Quite neet to eat Lunch, or slurf a Coffe as well as a Ice-Drowned Cappucino enjoyed in the friendly surrounding and company of the Summer-, or let's say Season-sprissing City People of Avellino.
This is the place where I used to spend my afternoons as a toddler. Might not be a great park, but it means the world to me. It's right in the middle of the main road of the city, so you're quite close to shops and coffee places. Ideal for a nice walk
It doesn't have any interesting things to see. If you go to Naples or Benevento, you're going to enjoy much more 😉
Should be more cleaned or taken care of, but it is quite peaceful and some games for children.
